Bogota: The Final Days/ Bogota: Los últimos días

Wow, this trip is coming to a close quickly. We are down in the debrief portion of outreach, the part where we reflect back on what we have done. We also get to do more of the touristy things now. But let me catch you up first before I try to explain these final three days.
Okay, so after the church planting ministry, which was especially hard to leave the second time around, we traveled to see the salt cathedral. It is supposed to be one of the seven wonders of the world. One of the most interesting things is that it is part of a salt mine that is five hundred years in the making! But the crazy thing is that they believe that it will take them approximately another five hundred years to mine the rest! Wow! Then Tuesday our group spit in half, as well as Wednesday. The first day I stayed back with half the team, and we cleaned the YWAM base ane rested, while the other half went to another YWAM ministry with street children. The first day was especially rough, because they were so excited to see us. The stories of some of the children are quite sad. One girl's mother tried drowning here, and now that her parents are dead, her aunt and grandmother raise her and her brother, but the abuse keeps coming. We found this out on Wednesday, when her brother, one of the more roudy ones, came up to us and asked for help. I ask that you pray for them, many of the children we worked with, live on the streets, are in abusive homes, or they live with a single mom, who works as a prostitute. On Wednesday the team that stayed back, and the team that went switched. It was very challenging to do our program for the children the first two days, because we only had five people at a time, and almost all the dramas use at least six. Thursday was special, because it was our last day with the children. We celbrated the birthdays of four, and were able to do the rest of our dramas finally. Jamie got up and share her testimony, and it really touched the lives of the children there, because she too comes from an abusive home. This seemed to baffle most of the children, because USA is supposed to be perfect. In the afternoon, around two Malissa and Jamie got to go with a few locals to look at just a few of thousand upon thousands of red light districts in Bogota alone! I think that they went to maybe 7 at maximum! When we left it was especially hard for the kids to say goodbye. They loved the group so much. Friday we did a deep cleaning there until lunch, and the around six the team got treated with dinner. I got steak, the Colombian way, and then we got to go to the top of a bank tower and overlook the city, it was so beautiful! That night I got really just sick to my stomach and threw up for the first time in nearly thirteen years. Yesterday we went to a hot spings the water was not as hot as I expected it, but it served me well. It was just what I needed to get over my sickness. Today we are cleaning up, and moving to a hotel for the final two nights of outreach. We hope to go to a cultural exhibit which is only open once a year, today, and shows exhibits for cities all over Colombia. Tomorrow, we think we got a hook up and might be going to see a coffee plantation! Then Tuesday is off. We head to the airport at nine or so, and our flight to Houston leaves at twelve. We should be back to Portland by one, and Salem around two or so depending on if we make any stops or not.

This past week has been really busy. After the children at risk ministry in the mountains, we traveled back to the YWAM base in Bogotá to pack and then head off to our next location in Santa Fe, a suburb of Bogotá. There we worked with a church planting family and fell in love with the ministry, as well as the church there.-The hospitality was wonderful, as we have grown used to here in Colombia, and the staff were especially outgoing.-Our time there was spent interceding for the neighborhood, doing friendship evangelism at a café, and putting on a church service for their home church. The café and church are run out of the first story of their three story house. Talk about a devoted couple. The neighbors, friends and church members were just as amazing. One of our favorite times was catching up with the family of our friend who is doing DTS in Cartegéna. Then we traveled back to the YWAM base to repack and then head of to another children at risk ministry here in Bogotá. It happened to be the same ministry that Malissa -my co-leader- had origionally wanted to come to Colombia for, but God told here to wait and come with the DTS. Many of our students had their passions stirred here. Some to do a Children at Risk School with YWAM, and others to maybe come back and partner with the ministry. Most of the work here that we did was work projects sanding and painting a fence. However, the first day we did work in the school and the drop-in center, doing programs and helping out in anyway that we could. Today is a day off technically, but half the team and I have opted to go early to the ministry that we worked with last weekend (the church planting couple). We will be doing friendship evangelism tonight, and tomorrow night. As well as doing two church services, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Then on Monday we have a fun day planned for the students. I hope to write again then.

Espero volver a escribir a continuación.

Bogotá: The Arrival

Well, on Sunday we arrived in Bogotá. At the airport though, the funniest thing happened to me. The person who checks your bags pulled me aside, checked my backpack, and asked me if she could have two que-tips! Only in Colombia. The rest of Sunday and Monday we toured the city; walking the streets, looking at museums (they had a really cool art museum). We even got to walk past the Presidential Palace, and my favorite, we got to tour the ´Plaza de Toro´-the place where they fight bulls. The past two days and tomorrow as well we will be working with the ´children at risk´ in San Luis, a mountain town on the outskirts of Bogotá. The veiw from the house there is simply breath taking. I love working with the children, we have really been able to make an impact on their lives as well as the lives of the workers there. Please keep these children in your prayers. One was raped and is now five months pregnant at the age of 15! The workers have seen it as young as 13 though! Another thing is these children are introduced to drugs and alcohol at school as young as 6-8 years old and the sad thing is, it is during school hours usually every Friday, sometimes Thursday, and the teachers are often there! Please pray for the ministry here.
